SQUARE
(RYNEK)
The Square was built after Tartars' attack in 1241
and is the second as far as its sizes are concerned
Square in Poland. Its sizes are 173 * 208 m. The pearl
of Wroclaw's is late Gothic Town Hall, one of the most
beautiful in Europe. On a special attention deserves
the east and south facade full of dainty sculptures
made in XVII c. Characteristic feature of the Town Hall
is its soaring tower. Inside the Town Hall, there is
a Historic Museum with a beautiful Miszczańska Room
like also baroque stairs and vaults. Around the Square
attract the attention historic tenements among which
fabulous tenements "Jas" and "Malgosia",
Renaissance "Pod Gryfami" and many, many others.
It is worth visiting adjacent to the Old Exchange and
baroque tenement houses. On the Square stands a monumental,
that comes from XIV c. St. Elizabeth church from which
83 m height tower, one may see a beautiful view that
spreads for whole Wroclaw. In the east part of Square
stands a Gothic St. Mary Magdalene's Church. This Church
was built in XIV c. and his main and characteristic
feature is brilliant Romanesque portal from the end
of XIII c.

It is worth visiting just because of a wonderful and
vast collection of works of art. From the Middle Ages
time like also because of paintings of famous Polish
painters from XVII c.

UNIVERSITY QUARTER (DZIELNICA
UNIWERSYTECKA)
University quarter is situated on Odra River. The baroque
building of University is one of the most characteristic
accents of Wroclaw. The University was established as
Jesuit Academy by Leopold I in 1702. The greatest attraction
of baroque University buildings is Leopoldyńska Hall.
The Hall as such is the most stunning interior of the
building and comes from XVIII c. Unusual richness of
wall paintings and sculptures make this monument outstanding.
Interesting fact is the illusion of prolonging the hall
and raising the ceiling. Near the University edifice,
there is Ossolinski's Library from 1715 that keeps old
collections of books.

OSTROW TUMSKI
Ostrow Tumski is a cradle of the city. The settlement
on the isle began in VIII c. , and in the Middle Ages,
Ostrow was a quarter of dukes and bishops. The most
precious monument is Ostrów is St. Jan Chrzciciel Cathedral.
This monumental, Gothic building was built in XIII and
XIV c. Inside, one can admire the remnants of Romanesque
basilica from XII c. in a from of crypt and two columns
with sculptures, a monumental Gothic altar that comes
from school of master Veit Stoss (Wit Stwosz) and baroque
chapel of St. Elizabeth. Near the cathedral there are
four other churches, also worth. There is, among them
one of the most precious monuments of Gothic in Poland
- the church of St. Martin from XII c.

PIASEK ISLAND
On this island which is situated on the North from
The Old Town there is the Church of St. Mary on the
Sand. The church was found in XIV c. Worth seeing is
its beautiful vault.
