The
Piasts, the rulers of Poland founded here about X c.
a castle and a settlement. However Wroclaw takes its
real origin from a settlement on an isle on Odra River
that is called Ostrów Tumski. In the year 1000, the
king Boleslaw Chrobry, founded here a bishopric and
then the city became a capital of Silesia's dukes. After
capturing and burning the city in XIII c. by Tartars,
the center was moved on a place where currently the
Old Town is. Through ages, the city was under influences
of Chechs and it was a time of the most eventful development
of the city. During the Germans reign, the name Wroclaw
was changed on Breslan. During World War II, Wroclaw
was seriously damaged, and after the war the city became
Polish once again.
